How to Autofill Job Applications from Your Resume (Without the Risk)
Most autofill tools break on Greenhouse and Workday. How to fill applications from your resume without letting a bot invent your answers.

Filling out a job application on Greenhouse or Workday is a known, repetitive chore. Your name, email, phone number, address, and work history — the same data, typed or pasted again, into the same fields, for the sixth time this week. The experience is tedious by design: ATS platforms are built for employers to collect data, not for applicants to submit it quickly.
Browser autofill fills your name and email. Your password manager handles credentials. But neither one helps with the fields that take the most time: the full work history section, skills, cover letter content, or the structured experience fields that Greenhouse and Workday generate dynamically at application time.
This post explains why most autofill approaches fail on ATS platforms, how structure-aware autofill works differently, and what responsible autofill design looks like when the form is asking for sensitive information.
Why standard autofill breaks on ATS platforms
Your browser's built-in autofill and most general-purpose form fillers work by matching field names and IDs — they look for an HTML input with `name='email'` or `id='phone_number'` and fill the value they have for that field. This works reliably on contact forms and checkout pages, where field names follow predictable conventions.
ATS platforms like Greenhouse, Workday, Lever, Ashby, and iCIMS generate their forms differently. Field IDs are often dynamic — they change between sessions, between employers, and sometimes between page loads. The field labelled 'Current Company' in Greenhouse is not guaranteed to have the same underlying ID across two different employer applications. General-purpose autofill tools relying on ID matching miss these fields consistently, or fill the wrong values into the wrong inputs.
Workday is particularly challenging: it uses a component-based rendering system where what looks like a standard text field is actually a custom interactive component. Traditional browser-level autofill does not interact with these components at all — the field appears empty even if the browser thinks it filled it.
How structure-aware autofill works
Instead of matching field IDs, structure-aware autofill reads the visible form structure — the labels, the surrounding context, the logical grouping of fields — to determine what each input is asking for, and then fills the appropriate value from your profile. This is closer to how a person reads and fills a form: you don't look for `id='current_employer'`; you see a text box labelled 'Current Company' and type the answer.

For company career pages that run their own application form (not a major ATS), the extension reads the page structure the same way. The majority of custom career page forms use standard enough HTML that structure-reading works reliably. What gets filled — and what doesn't
The extension pre-fills fields it can map confidently from your nxtleap profile: contact information, work history (employer, title, dates, location), education (institution, degree, dates), skills, professional links, and cover letter content if you've drafted one for the role. You review every field before submitting — the extension never auto-submits.
Sensitive fields: on-device only
EEO fields — gender identity, date of birth, disability status, veteran status, race and ethnicity — are handled differently. These fields are filled on your device only. The data is never sent to nxtleap's servers or to any AI provider for processing. The extension keeps these values in local browser storage and reads them at fill time without a round-trip to any external system.
Certain fields are never stored or filled by the extension, regardless of configuration. SSN, passport number, and payment details are out of scope entirely. If a form includes fields for these values — which most job application forms do not — they are left blank and flagged for manual input.
This design reflects a core principle of responsible autofill: the tool should reduce friction on the tedious parts of job applications without creating new risks on the sensitive ones. Speed on standard fields; caution on protected data; nothing on credentials.
The walk-through: capture to submitted application
Step 1: Install Opportunity Radar
Add the Chrome extension from the Web Store. It connects to your existing nxtleap account — your profile, work history, education, and Achievement Bank are already there. If you're new to nxtleap, the setup walk-through prompts you to add the fields the autofill will draw from.
Step 2: Find and capture the role on LinkedIn
When you find the role you want to apply to on LinkedIn, click the nxtleap icon to capture it into your Opportunity Radar pipeline. The job description is saved, and you see your Achievement Bank match score for the role immediately.
Step 3: Tailor your resume (optional but recommended)
From your Opportunity Radar pipeline, open the captured role and run the Matchmaker. It rewrites your top achievements to match the job description's language and generates a tailored resume. This matters for ATS screening more than most applicants realise. The same role is advertised under different titles across employers: 'Customer Success Manager' at one company appears as 'CSM', 'Client Account Manager', or 'Client Success Lead' at another. An ATS screening for 'Client Account Manager' will not reliably surface a resume that only says 'Customer Success Manager' — even when the underlying experience is identical. The Matchmaker rewrites your achievements using the exact terminology from the specific job description you are applying to, so the ATS reads a keyword match rather than a near-miss.
Step 4: Navigate to the application and click autofill
Click the application link from your pipeline — or navigate to it from LinkedIn. On a Greenhouse, Workday, Lever, Ashby, iCIMS, or company careers page, click the nxtleap icon in your toolbar. The extension reads the form and pre-fills every field it can map from your profile. Sensitive EEO fields are filled from local storage, not from the server. You see the completed form exactly as it will be submitted.
Step 5: Review and submit
Go through every field before submitting. The extension makes it possible to complete the form in seconds; you remain responsible for reviewing the content and submitting it. A pre-filled form you haven't reviewed is an opportunity for an error — a wrong date, a transposed number, a cover letter from the wrong role. Read before you click Submit.
BYOK: running the AI on your device
Some job descriptions are poorly structured — raw HTML, inconsistent formatting, or multi-part descriptions that make field mapping harder. Opportunity Radar supports an optional Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) configuration: you connect your own OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic API key, and the extension uses that key to clean up and parse messy descriptions locally before filling. The key is stored in your browser and never transmitted to nxtleap. If you don't add a key, the extension fills from the structured data in your profile without AI parsing.
What autofill doesn't replace
Autofill is speed on the mechanical parts of an application. It doesn't replace the strategic parts: writing a cover letter that addresses the specific role, tailoring your resume to the job description's language, or researching the company.
